Encourage One Another

DAY 12: ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

DEVOTION

Joshua was entering into a season beyond his capability and control. For the previous forty years, he had been a faithful disciple and assistant to Moses, yet now that Moses had died, it was his time to lead. I can imagine he felt all the emotions. Overwhelmed. Anxious. Brave and scared all at the same time.

As Joshua 1 starts, we find the Lord speaking directly to his soul. Three different times, God tells Joshua to be “strong and courageous” (Joshua 1:6-9). The Lord knew if Joshua possessed courage on the inside, nothing could stop him on the outside. He would win many battles and lead God’s people into the Promised Land.

Today, as we journey through the New Testament, we encounter a new man of courage in the Apostle Paul. His zeal for evangelism and church planting was unmatched. Among the churches he planted was the Thessalonian Church, a community navigating its trials from persecution and affliction to the frustrations of false teachers. Paul’s advice was simple yet profound: “Encourage one another” (1 Thess. 4:18, 5:11). The word “encourage” means to instill courage in someone, just as it was for Joshua in battle.

I want to encourage you, today. I honor you for reading this devotional and prioritizing God’s Word. You’re growing and getting better, not allowing laziness and distraction to win. Some simple ways to encourage one another are making a call, sending a text, or writing an email expressing gratitude for someone. You can also encourage someone by reminding them about the things of eternity and how this world is not our destination; Heaven is (1 Thess. 4:16-18). But one of the most powerful ways to encourage one another is by inspiring them to get plugged into community and not forsake meeting together (Heb. 10:24-25). Diving deeper into community can provide the support and encouragement we all need. So, take a step today and pray for moments to put courage into someone’s heart.

24 “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” – Hebrews 10:24–25

PRAYER

Father, today I’m asking You for the same courage You gave Joshua and breathed into Paul. Give me encouragement from above to step out and encourage one another in my life. Give me discernment, the right words, and the right people you want me to encourage. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen!

CHALLENGE

Prayerfully consider who needs your encouragement today. Mediate on who, when, and how to encourage one another in your life. Trust the Lord’s leading and instill courage into someone today.
