There’s a simple law of life when it comes to sowing and reaping: the seeds you sow determine the fruit you grow.

When you plant an apple seed, you shouldn’t be surprised when apples eventually grow. When you plant orange seeds, the expected result is oranges. What you plant today determines what you harvest tomorrow.

Sowing and reaping was one of Jesus’ favorite pictures for illustrating the kingdom of God. In Matthew 13, He tells of a farmer scattering seed and emphasizes the importance of good soil. In Mark 4, Jesus describes a farmer who scatters seed, goes to sleep, and over time God brings the growth.

The principle is simple: seeds planted faithfully can produce fruit eventually.

Paul picks up similar language as he closes his letter to the Galatian church. He contrasts sowing to the flesh with sowing to the Spirit. Notice his words: “The one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”

So, what does it practically look like to sow to the Spirit?

Every time you open your Bible and spend time in God’s Word, you are planting seeds that shape your spiritual life.

Every time you open your mouth to worship Jesus, you sow to the Spirit, who delights in glorifying Jesus (John 16:14).

Every time you repent of sin and turn toward holiness, you sow to the Spirit, because He is the Holy Spirit.

Every time you practice generosity for the kingdom of God, you sow to the Spirit.

Every time you forgive someone—especially when it’s difficult—you sow to the Spirit, allowing Him to produce His grace and fruit in and through you.

In the business world, there’s a term called ROI: return on investment. In a similar way, there is a spiritual return on what we continually invest our lives in.

When you sow to the Spirit, there is a spiritual ROI—a harvest that leads to life.

But sowing to the flesh has an ROI too. In that case, you might call it a regret on investment. Paul says the harvest is corruption—and none of us wants to sign up for that!

Finally, Paul reminds us that a harvest requires endurance: “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

Sometimes it takes time to see the fruit of what you’ve been sowing. Don’t mistake a delayed harvest for a wasted seed.

Keep sowing. Keep watering. Keep cultivating the ground. Keep trusting God with the growth.

A spiritual harvest is possible if you don’t give up.

My prayer for you today is that as you continually sow to the Spirit, you will experience His fruit coming to life in you—and in due season, see a harvest that was worth the wait.
