DAY 2: ANSWERING THE CALL

“And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.”
—Acts 16:10

DEVOTION

We live in a day dominated by smartphones, text messages, emails, social media chats and more. Communication is literally at our fingertips—yet the simple act of answering a phone call feels more outdated than ever. I remember growing up with a “house phone.” Anyone remember those? You’d give someone your number, let your parents or siblings know you were expecting a call, and then…you waited. There was something significant about knowing, I’m expecting a call.

Today, with spam calls and telemarketers constantly buzzing our phones, we’ve grown skeptical. More often than not, we let calls go unanswered. We ignore them, send them to voicemail, or plan to “deal with it later.”

Now imagine a different scenario. What if your phone rang and you knew—without a doubt—that it was God calling? The Lord Jesus Himself was reaching out to you. Would you answer immediately? Would you send it to voicemail? Would you ignore it and continue with your day? Maybe you’d text back, “Can I call You later?” Or would you be eager to answer the call?

This is where the apostle Paul finds himself in Acts 16. Paul had learned to live with an open ear and an obedient heart. Just before the Macedonian vision, the Holy Spirit blocked his plans—first in Asia, then again in Bithynia (Acts 16:6–7). Paul didn’t force doors open. He didn’t insist on his own agenda. He waited. Then, in the night, God gave him a vision: a man from Macedonia pleading, “Come over and help us.” Paul didn’t need all the details. He didn’t ask for a five-year plan. He simply concluded that God had called—and immediately he responded. Like Abraham before him, Paul stepped out in faith, crossed cultural boundaries, and carried the gospel into Europe for the very first time.

Part of knowing God is learning to recognize—and answer—His call.God’s call may come through a specific verse of Scripture that grips your heart. It may come as a clear prompting from the Holy Spirit. It may be a conviction to repent of a sin pattern, the courage to apologize, or the nudge to share Jesus with someone. Often, God doesn’t reveal the entire roadmap—just the next faithful step.

I felt called to step out in faith and write this devotional, trusting that God would use it to encourage someone else. I’m grateful I answered. And I believe you will be too. Today, know God more deeply by answering when He calls.

PRAYER

Lord, help me to recognize Your voice above all others. Give me a heart that is willing, attentive, and quick to obey. Even when I don’t have all the answers, help me to trust You with the next step. Remove fear, hesitation, and distraction, and teach me to respond in faith. I want to know You more by answering the call. In Jesus’ name, amen!

NEXT STEP

Ask God today: “Lord, what are You calling me to do?”
When He reveals the next step—no matter how small—choose to trust His heart and plan and answer the call.

Thank you so much for sharing everything with us. I may be a senior citizen but I’m still learning, I’m still trying, I don’t just want a relationship with him but I need to have one. I need him, I desire him, I want to learn more. So thank you for the tools you are providing us. God Bless!

    Spam Calls
Something that I had taken away from the devotional today was being wary of spam calls. In the devotional it said that hearing God speak to you is a part of a relationship with him. It’s what comes with having a relationship with him, it’s hardwired into getting to know him is that he will speak to you and use you for His Glory the more you begin to know and grow in having a relationship with him. One thing that had stuck out to me was having discernment. While yes God will show you your next step, but also be wary of spam calls that disguise themselves as God. I believe one thing God gives you as you grow in a relationship with him is discernment knowing his will and knowing what is not of his will is important. In Jeremiah 17:9-10 We can see God talking about our heart, ““The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.”” He says it is deceitful and wicked the only person that truly knows our heart is God and in knowing him you will see his will compared to the will and desires of our flesh. The more we deepen our relationship with God we don’t have to worry about spam calls because going deeper with God he will have a contact in your phone to the point where you know if it’s God’s will or our own deceitful greedy desires that are on the other end of the line.

The part about phone calls hits so close to home because now that we deal with all these spam calls etc I tend to ignore them so I don’t have to deal with them. I want to be ready when Jesus calls. There is no doubt in my mind and heart that if Jesus were to call me I’d answer it in a heartbeat.

I love the phone call example! I hate phone calls, so it was eye opening to look at it through this lens. Because if I’m honest, before this season, I often had my phone on silent. Lately, it’s off silent because I’m expecting a call from my baby’s doctor each day. But if I’m honest, I’m not even expecting a call from God. And I think that’s part of it! I need to anticipate that He will speak to me and work on being in constant communion with Him, even when it feels like He is silent. This line of connection needs to be open 24/7 and my default can’t be sending it to voicemail because I may miss something that I need for a specific moment. If ya stay ready, ya ain’t gotta get ready!!!
