DAY 21: FINISH YOUR RACE

by Pastor Heiden Ratner
Jan. 25th, 2026

“But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” –Acts 20:24

DEVOTION

Finishing well matters.

The older I get, the less impressed I am by someone’s ability to start something—and the more captivated I am by their ability to finish it. That’s true when I observe others, and it’s true in my own life. I can start things with the best of them. I’m a great book starter… but if I’m honest, I don’t always make it to the finish line. My wife has even been holding me accountable to finish the water bottles I open. And I’ve got several projects “in the works”—time will tell if they actually get finished.

Because finishing well doesn’t happen by luck or chance. It takes discipline, focus, and the help of the Lord.

Scripture is filled with people who ran their race and finished strong—and also people who didn’t. We see imperfect but faithful finishers like Abraham, Joseph, Joshua, Caleb, Ruth, Esther, Daniel, and Nehemiah. And we also see sobering warnings: leaders with real calling and kingdom moments—yet costly decisions along the way affected how they finished. The Bible is honest about both, because God wants us to learn.

In the New Testament, the same pattern continues. Peter nearly threw it all away, but he got back up and finished well. Stephen and Paul gave everything for the gospel. And above all, Jesus Himself, who with His final breath declared, “It is finished.” (John 19:30)

So when Paul speaks in Acts 20, his words carry weight.

As he concludes his third missionary journey, he gathers the Ephesian elders—leaders he poured into for nearly three years. He knows this will be the last time he’ll see them. And standing beside the sea, Paul reveals what mattered most:

“But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” (Acts 20:24)

Paul wasn’t saying his life didn’t matter—he was saying his life wasn’t his. He had a course. He had a ministry. He had an assignment from the Lord. A race to run. And he wanted to finish it.

That’s the invitation for you and me too.

Today, as we conclude this 21-day journey, I want to honor you: you made it to the finish line. Along the way, we followed Paul’s steps—but more importantly, we were invited into Paul’s passion: to know God and to live for what matters most.

My prayer is that you know Him better because of this journey, that you feel strengthened to keep running your race with endurance, and that by the help of the Holy Spirit you would finish your course—faithful, steady, and fixing your eyes on Jesus until you see Him face to face (Hebrews 12:1-3).

Every step counts. Each day is a gift. And the Lord promises to be with you through it all.

Keep running. Finish your race.

PRAYER

Lord, thank You for the grace to begin and the grace to finish. Help me to run with endurance the race You’ve set before me. Please  give me strength and resilience. When I’m tired, renew me. When I’m distracted, refocus me. Help me to value obedience over comfort and purpose over applause. I pray I would know You more as I finish my course and fulfill Your calling on my life. In Jesus’ name, amen!

NEXT STEP

Identify one area you’ve been tempted to quit—something you started with faith but haven’t finished. Write it down. Pray over it. Then take one concrete step today to move it forward. Don’t focus on the whole race—focus on the next faithful step.

As we finish 21 days of Prayer and fasting and Deepen weekend , it’s really the beginning of something bigger – way bigger than the confines of my psyche.
