DAY 4: TURNING PAIN INTO PRAISE

by Pastor Heiden Ratner
Jan. 8th, 2026

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake… and everyone’s bonds were unfastened.” —Acts 16:25–26

DEVOTION

Every battle has its weapons. Soldiers fight with strategy and armor. Athletes compete with strength, discipline, and endurance. But as followers of Jesus, our primary weapon looks very different. We don’t fight with control or influence—we fight with praise.

Throughout the Bible, God invites His people to worship before the victory is visible. When King Jehoshaphat led Judah into battle, they lifted their voices in praise and the Lord fought on their behalf (2 Chronicles 20:22). The walls of Jericho fell after the people shouted to the Lord in faith (Joshua 6:1–20). David praised God before facing Goliath (1 Samuel 17:45-47), Gideon led his outnumbered army with a shout of worship (Judges 7:18-22), and even Jesus sang a hymn with His disciples before going to the cross (Matthew 26:30). Praise positions our hearts to trust God in the battle.

Paul and Silas understood this truth. While preaching the gospel in Philippi, they saw real fruit—Lydia and her household came to faith in Christ. But after they cast a demon out of a young girl and disrupted sinful practices, they were beaten and thrown into prison. Bruised, exhausted, and chained, they found themselves in a dark cell at midnight.

Instead of complaining, Paul and Silas chose praise. They prayed. They sang hymns. They worshiped God in the middle of their pain. As the other prisoners listened, the ground began to shake. Doors flew open. Chains fell off. Their praise released freedom into the atmosphere.

That same night, a hopeless jailer encountered the saving power of Jesus, and his entire household was saved. What began as suffering became salvation—all because praise was lifted in the storm.

If you’re facing a battle today—feeling worn down, stuck, or discouraged—turn your pain into praise and your worry into worship. God meets us in the battle, and praise helps us know Him better in each circumstance!

PRAYER

Jesus, I choose to praise You even when it’s hard. Help me trust You in the middle of the battle and worship You before the breakthrough comes. Turn my pain into praise and draw me closer to You. Put a song in my heart and I will praise You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

NEXT STEP

Identify one area of your life where you’ve been complaining or worrying. Today, intentionally replace it with praise—through prayer, worship music, or Scripture. Write down what changes in your heart as you do.

Our praise can unlock somebody’s else chains!! What a WORD!! When everything works out, we praise. When nothing works out, we praise. And God is with us through it all. Great reminder that praise and worship are weapons!! It literally is a part of how we FIGHT spiritual battles, not just a way to give God glory. And I love the prayer where we ask God to put a song on our heart. I don’t pray that enough. And in this season, I’m going to pray for a new song and see what happens!
