DAY 13: AS I HAVE LOVED YOU

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” – John 15:12

DEVOTION

By now, the disciples had likely been sufficiently inspired by the first 11 verses of John 15. They understood the importance of abiding in Christ and the significance of staying connected to the vine. They were convinced that this connection would lead to bearing fruit, more fruit, and even much fruit. They nodded in agreement with Jesus’ directive to obey His commands and wholeheartedly said “amen” to His promises of agapé love and fullness of joy, both resulting in the glory of God.

Perhaps you find yourself in a similar position—motivated to abide, committed to obey, and ready to receive. So, where do we start? Jesus turned to His eager disciples and laid out the game plan: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12). Similar to when Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was out of the over 600+ existing, His answer has remained consistent: Love God and love people (Matthew 22:34-40). Instead of presenting a detailed list of commands, He simply gave this clear directive: “Love one another.”

In his first epistle, John the disciple confirms this truth by stating:

“We know that we have passed out of death into life because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers” (1 John 3:14–16).

True abiding in Jesus will always result in loving others the way Jesus loves us. He is the vine; we are the branches. His love to us transforms into His love through us. Today, let us commit to living out 1 John 3:16 by laying down our lives to love those whom He has placed in our path.

PRAYER

Father in Heaven, thank You for modeling sacrificial love toward me and those around me. Your love compels me and comforts me at the same time. I’m grateful for Your gift of love shown at the cross, and I pray You would use me to love people in healing and helpful ways today. In Jesus’ name, amen!

NEXT STEP

Tell someone you love them today and mean it. Show someone you love them today without expecting anything back in return.
