DAY 14: GREATER LOVE HAS NONE THAN THIS

by Pastor Heiden Ratner

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13

DEVOTION

One of my favorite war-based movies is “Hacksaw Ridge,” which tells the true story of Desmond T. Doss. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to carry arms in World War II. Doss faced criticism and ridicule for his principled stance. However, he ultimately earned the respect and admiration of his fellow soldiers through his bravery and courage as he risked his life to rescue his injured comrades in battle. During the Battle of Okinawa, he saved 75 men and became well-known for his powerful prayer: “Lord, please help me get one more.”

Desmond Doss embodied a love that closely resembles the love of Christ. His love was not merely words but a demonstration of selfless service. When we reflect on the sacrificial love of Jesus, we understand that He not only risked His life but willingly gave it to save us. Paul writes in Romans 5:8, “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The word “while” continually challenges me. It wasn’t when we were at our best—serving in church, holding our Bibles, or raising our hands in worship—that He died for us. Rather, it was while we were still sinners. In our most difficult moments, Christ demonstrated His greatest love by sacrificing Himself for us, the ultimate expression of love (John 15:13).

Today, as you abide in the vine, seek the Lord’s guidance on how He wants you to show His sacrificial love through your actions. Remember that the longer you abide in Him, the more His character and attributes will be cultivated within you. Sacrificial love will naturally flow from you because that’s what is within our Savior. While you may not be facing a physical battle today, you are engaged in a spiritual one, and love is the key to winning the battle and taking others with you.

PRAYER

Father, thank You for Your sacrificial love in my life. While I was a sinner, You came for me and paid for me. Thank You for Your life, death, resurrection, and the promise that You’re coming back someday. I ask You to use me to demonstrate Your love to a needy and broken world. Fill me up so that I am ready to pour out. In Jesus’ name, amen!

NEXT STEP

Look for small ways today to humble yourself by serving those in need and showing them His love. Take a moment to think about your top five friends and pray about how you can lay down your life in practical ways to better love your friends than you do now.

    Day 14

Really resonates with me, because I think of who I was and what I was, But God. My two most favorite words in all of history. God showed his love and continues to show his love for me by giving his son. His son giving his life, all for me in my worst state. Lord I thank you for your love, may O exhibit this type of love to those around me.today.
