DAY 17: SET YOUR MIND ON THE SPIRIT
by Pastor Heiden Ratner
Sept. 16th, 2026
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” —Romans 8:5–6
DEVOTION
Few things influence our lives more than our minds. What we think affects how we feel, what we say, how we act, and even how we relate to God.
A. W. Tozer wrote, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” What we believe about God shapes how we approach Him.If our thoughts about Him are distorted, our relationship with Him will be affected.
Our spiritual enemy understands this, which is why he works to keep God’s Word from taking root in us and attacks us with lies and deception (Luke 8:12; Ephesians 6:16–17). Scripture repeatedly calls us to guard our hearts, renew our minds, and dwell on what is true (Proverbs 4:23; Romans 12:2; Philippians 4:8).
In Romans 8, Paul tells believers to “set their minds on the things of the Spirit.” This is more than occasionally thinking about spiritual matters. To set your mind is to deliberately direct it—to establish its focus and return it there again and again.
Why does this matter so much? Because our thoughts are not spiritually neutral. Paul says that a mind governed by the flesh leads to death, while a mind governed by the Spirit produces life and peace.
So, what are you setting your mind on?
This question is not meant to condemn you for every distracting, fearful, or sinful thought that enters your mind. You may not control every thought that appears, but you can choose which thoughts you welcome, nurture, and obey. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, you can take ungodly thoughts captive and bring them under the truth of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).
We set our minds on the Spirit by cultivating a close and dependent relationship with God. As we pray, read and memorize Scripture, and meditate on God’s truth, the Spirit renews our thinking and redirects our attention toward Christ. When our minds wander toward fear, temptation, bitterness, or distraction, we can intentionally bring them back to what is true.
This may also require examining what we regularly allow into our minds. Are the voices you follow, the entertainment you consume, and the messages you repeat drawing you toward God or pulling you away from Him? This is not about creating legalistic rules. It is about wisely removing what feeds the flesh and making room for what helps you walk by the Spirit.
Your life will move in the direction of the thoughts you dwell on. Today, choose to turn your attention toward the Spirit. His way leads to life and peace.
“Our lives are always moving in the direction of our strongest thoughts. What we think shapes who we are.” —Craig Groeschel
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, reveal the thoughts and influences that are pulling me away from You. Renew my mind with Your truth, and help me take every thought captive to Christ. Teach me to focus on what honors You and to reject the lies that feed my flesh. Govern my mind today, and fill me with Your life and peace. Amen.
NEXT STEP
Pay attention to what occupies your mind today. Write down one recurring thought that is producing fear, temptation, anger, or discouragement. Then find a truth from Scripture that speaks to it. Each time that thought returns, intentionally replace it with God’s truth and ask the Holy Spirit to renew your mind.
