DAY 6: YOU CAN DO NOTHING

by Pastor Heiden Ratner
Jan. 11th, 2025

“I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” – John 15:5

DEVOTION

In John 15:5, Jesus emphasizes His role as the vine. If you’re anything like me, you may struggle with forgetfulness or casually drift away from abiding in Him, relying instead on your own strength. This reminder is for us. In just five verses, Jesus tells His disciples for the second time that He is the vine—it’s not us, our gifts, our abilities, our determination, drive, or ambition. It’s not our cleverness, finances, or possessions. It’s not dependent on what others say about us, or any false vine we might put in His place. There is only one true vine: Jesus.

The wonderful truth in John 15 is that as we abide in Him, He abides in us. He takes a lifeless branch and infuses it with heavenly power from above. Apart from this supernatural union, Jesus teaches us that we can do “nothing.” Take a moment to reflect on the weight of that phrase: “No thing.” Author John Piper elaborates on this idea:

“Oh, how we need to wake up to how much “nothing” we spend our time doing. Apart from prayer, all our scurrying about, all our talking, all our study amounts to “nothing.” For most of us the voice of self-reliance is ten times louder than the bell that tolls for the hours prayer. The voice cries out: You must open the mail, you must make that call, you must write this sermon, you must prepare for the board meeting, you must go to the hospital.” But the bell tolls softly: “Without Me you can do nothing.”

As we contemplate this reality, it’s easy to feel discouraged. However, let’s shift our focus away from ourselves and back to the vine. The Lord Jesus graciously invites us to abide in Him, offering us the opportunity to exchange our “nothingness” for His fruitfulness.

PRAYER

Father, I come to you today with gratitude for Your invitation to abide in You. I’m aware of my drift toward ‘nothingness’ so often. I can be independent when I don’t need to be and exchange Your power for my own efforts. Please help me, by Your grace, to rely on You and walk with You today. In Jesus’ name, amen!

NEXT STEP

Take time to reflect on how you spend your time and repent of areas where you feel you are relying solely on yourself. Invite the Lord into those areas and ask Him to bring forth fruit where there is emptiness.

Praise God! Wonderful Scripture and powerful reminder to rely on the Lord at all times. I need Him today and can do nothing without Him. I don’t want to do anything apart from Him! I want our Father to receive all the glory! So funny story: I shared with Vashawn John 15:1-8 this morning and he asked me if I had read the devotional today regarding John 15:5. I said no, I was reading Proverbs 12:3 and I had written a cross reference to John 15:1-8. I went to read that scripture and that’s when I sent that portion of John to him. Well, after he asked me about the devotional, I went and downloaded the WALK Church app and found your devotional! Praise God for Holly orchestrates beautiful little details, in order for us to worship Him! Thanks for the devotional, Pastor. May the Lord bless you and Walk Church as you all abide in him today.

When I saw the cherries I knew this was for me. Cherries have been my thing since 8th grade and today’s devotion was so impactful. Sometimes the are not sweet or they have no flavor. I want my fruit to have flavor. Thank you Jesus for being faithful when we are just shuffling around wasting time, and thank you PH for this devotion.

So good!! Praise the Lord and love the testimony and cherries example. Lord, bear fruit in us that has flavor that lasts. Thank you for sharing!

Praise God that we are given the opportunity to exchange our “nothingness” for fruitfulness! May we abide in the Vine every moment so that we don’t waste time on things that don’t have an eternal purpose!

I am reminded of the practices of Brother Lawerence. Consistently acknowledging the authority and fullness of God that fills the emptiness of our existence. How freeing it is to know that our fruitfulness stems from an all powerful and mighty vine. In him we can do NO THING.

Danny G — great reminder and word…. love that phrase the “mighty vine.”
