DAY 8: EAGER FOR THE WORD
by Pastor Heiden Ratner
Jan. 12th, 2026
“Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” – Acts 17:11
DEVOTION
“Dad, did my package arrive yet?”
The next day: “Hey Dad… did my package arrive yet?”
Later that evening: “Mom, why hasn’t it arrived? Can we go check?”
The next day: “Hey Dad… did my package arrive yet?”
Later that evening: “Mom, why hasn’t it arrived? Can we go check?”
That was the soundtrack in our house as my 8-year-old son waited for the Lego set he bought on Amazon with a gift card. He wasn’t casually interested—he was watching, asking, hoping, anticipating. That’s what eagerness looks like.
In Acts 17, Paul arrives in Berea after being persecuted in Thessalonica. He’s used to resistance in the synagogues—his gospel message often stirred hostility. But in Berea, everything feels different. Luke tells us the Bereans were “more noble” because of how they responded to God’s Word (Acts 17:11).
Their eagerness wasn’t for something temporary like Legos, but for something timeless: the Word of God. And they modeled a three-fold posture that can help any of us grow in knowing God:
- They received the word with eagerness — not bored, not guarded, not half-listening, but hungry and expectant.
- They examined the Scriptures — they didn’t just accept a message because a speaker was persuasive. They tested everything against God’s truth with humility and discernment.
- They did it daily — not occasionally, not only when it was convenient, but consistently. Over time, that kind of rhythm forms deep roots.
That’s the invitation for us today: come to God’s Word with anticipation, test what you hear against Scripture, and make it a daily priority. We live in a world filled with voices—news, media, influencers, opinions, clips, and commentary—and even our own flesh can be a loud voice, feeding us lies and excuses. The Bereans show us a better way: don’t just receive what you hear—filter it through God’s Word.
As we continue to know God better, may we grow in this kind of eagerness. And may our eagerness become consistency—because consistency is what deepens relationship, strengthens faith, and forms us in truth.
PRAYER
Lord, give me a hunger for Your Word. Help me receive it with eagerness, not as a task but as life-giving truth. Give me discernment and the right interpretation to test what I hear against Scripture, and the discipline to make time with You a daily priority. Feed me through Your Word and shape my mind, steady my heart, and draw me closer to You today. In Jesus’ name, amen!
NEXT STEP
Identify one loud voice this week (social media account, podcast, news habit, or even self-talk pattern).
- Limit it for 7 days (unfollow, mute, or set a boundary).
- Replace it with Scripture each day (start with Acts 17:11 + the Proverb that matches the day of the month).
Journal your takeaways.

Woooow. What a good next step. The loudest voice for me recently has been my own thoughts. It’s been a hot mess, and sometimes I don’t always replace these thoughts with Scripture. For every thought that comes up that doesn’t align with Scripture, I’ll write it down, find the Scripture that proves it false, and pray the TRUTH over myself until I believe it. I’ll probably have to just go ahead and memorize those Scriptures, too. That will be good for me. Thanks, Pastor Heiden!
