DAY 9: THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS

by Pastor Heiden Ratner
Sept. 8th, 2026

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” —Romans 8:14–16

DEVOTION

On the basketball court, I often found myself playing point guard—although, if I’m honest, I was a better shooting guard. I never saw a shot I didn’t like!

The point guard plays an important role on any team. They receive direction from the coach, set up the offense, and help everyone get into position. As much as I enjoyed playing point guard, I especially loved playing alongside great ones. The best point guards bring confidence and poise to the entire team because they know how to lead.

In a far greater way, the Holy Spirit provides leadership in the Christian life. He gives us direction, guides us into truth, and helps position us to walk in God’s purposes and plan for our lives.

Paul reminded the church in Rome that “all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” The Holy Spirit doesn’t lead us back into fear; He assures us that we have been adopted into God’s family. His leadership continually points us to our identity: We belong to God. We are His children, and we have a place in His family.

Paul gave similar instruction to the churches in Galatia:

“But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” —Galatians 5:18

Rather than relying on our own effort or rule-keeping to produce a godly life, we are called to depend on the Holy Spirit. He leads us according to God’s Word, reminds us of the teachings of Jesus, and empowers us to live in a way that honors Him. The Spirit will never lead us contrary to Scripture; He will always lead us toward truth, righteousness, and Christlikeness.

So, ask yourself today: Who is the primary leader of my life?

Is it your emotions, intellect, or personal desires? Is it the influence of the world, the pursuit of recognition, or the approval of others? Or is it the Spirit of God, who guides you into truth and reminds you that you belong to the Father?

We can receive wisdom and encouragement from others, but the primary leadership voice in our lives must be the Holy Spirit. Listen for His direction, submit to His Word, and let Him lead you today.

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, I surrender the leadership of my life to You. Quiet every competing voice and guide me according to Your Word. Remind me that I am a child of God, free me from fear, and lead me in truth, righteousness, and Christlikeness. Help me recognize Your direction and give me the courage to follow wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name, amen.

NEXT STEP

Identify one area of your life where you have been relying primarily on your own wisdom, emotions, or desires. Surrender it to the Holy Spirit in prayer, search God’s Word for direction, and obey the next step He reveals.
