DAY 10: THE HOLY SPIRIT GIFTS

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” —1 Corinthians 12:4–7
DEVOTION
In 1992, author Gary Chapman released his bestselling book The Five Love Languages. In it, Chapman describes five primary ways people tend to give and receive love. One of those love languages is receiving gifts—and that one ranks near the top for me.
I love receiving a thoughtful gift, but I may love giving one even more. Perhaps that is one reason I enjoy Christmas so much. There is something special about choosing the right gift for someone you love and watching them open it.
When it comes to the Holy Spirit, He is not only God’s gift to every believer—He also gives spiritual gifts. The Holy Spirit gives us life, leads our lives, and supernaturally equips us to serve others and glorify Jesus.
Paul writes that the Holy Spirit “apportions to each one individually as he wills” (1 Corinthians 12:11b).
Did you catch that? The Holy Spirit has a will. He is personal, purposeful, and intentional. He knows exactly which gifts to give each follower of Jesus. While the gifts are diverse, their source and purpose are the same: The Spirit gives them for the good of others and the glory of God.
Peter writes, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace…” (1 Peter 4:10). Some are gifted to teach, encourage, lead, give, serve, or show mercy. Others receive gifts of wisdom, faith, discernment, or administration. The gifts are many because the needs within the body of Christ are many. No one possesses every gift, but every follower of Jesus has been gifted to make a meaningful contribution.
Spiritual gifts are not trophies that display how important we are; they are tools that help us serve. We are not given gifts to build our own platform, but to build up God’s people.
That is why Paul writes, “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them…” (Romans 12:6a).
Let us use them.
Don’t leave your gift unopened. Discover it. Develop it. Deploy it for the good of others and the glory of Jesus.
If you do not yet know how the Holy Spirit has gifted you, ask Him to reveal it. Pay attention to the needs around you, the ways God has wired you, and the areas where others affirm His grace at work in your life.
You have been given a gift. Now, by the power of the Holy Spirit, use it.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, thank You for graciously giving me spiritual gifts. Help me recognize how You have equipped me and give me the humility and courage to use those gifts well. May everything You have placed within me serve others, strengthen Your church, and glorify Jesus. Amen.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you identify one gift He has given you. Then choose one practical way to use that gift to serve someone this week.
