DAY 17: LORD, TODAY I TAKE YOU AT YOUR WORD

by Pastor Heiden Ratner

“By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.” – Hebrews 11:28

DEVOTION

“He kept…” (Heb. 11:28a). These two words communicated Moses’ faith far better than any sermon he ever preached. He didn’t just believe God with his mind; he believed God with his hands.

James, the brother of Jesus, knew that genuine faith always leads to action. He writes, “…faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:17). He later contrasted demons to those with authentic faith. The difference? Demons believe God exists, but they don’t obey God’s word. Jesus affirmed this message in his famed Sermon on the Mount, asking, “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you”?” (Luke 6:46)

For Moses, this became a matter of life and death. It wasn’t just a cute trend to believe in God. He and the people of Israel would either take God at His word–by faith–or suffer the consequences of their unbelief. Hebrews 11:28 tells us Moses kept the first-ever Passover and sprinkled the lamb’s blood over his doorpost, declaring He believed God would do what He said (Ex 11-12).

Similarly, those who would call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ by faith would be covered by an even greater blood–the saving blood of Christ. Notice the language of John the Baptist upon seeing the Lord, “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) What a statement! Did John just refer to Jesus as the metaphorical lamb of God who takes away the sin of not just the Israelites but the entire world!? Yes, He did.

Today, we can take Him at His Word. Jesus came in the flesh, died for our sins, rose from the grave, ascended to the Father’s right hand, and will one day be back again. We will go to Him first, or He will come to us first. Until that great day, we walk by faith!

“The blood of the lamb applied over the doorpost on the night of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt distinguished the obedient from the disobedient. Just so today the applied blood of the Lamb of God is the distinguishing mark of God’s called out ones, the church.” – Billy Graham

PRAYER

Father, I pray today I would take You at Your Word. Not just some of your words but all of them. I believe You are who You say You are, and I believe You will do all You said You will do. I call upon Jesus Christ as my Savior, Lord, and the One who covered all my past, present, and future sins with His blood. Thank You for the Cross. And thank You for being true to Your Word. Help me walk it out by faith today. In Jesus’ name, amen!
