Few things are more frustrating than discovering you had a stain on your shirt, something in your nose, or food stuck between your teeth—and no one told you.

This recently happened to me after a meeting. I walked into the bathroom, glanced in the mirror, and realized something noticeable was stuck between my teeth. As I quickly handled it, I had one thought: I wish someone would have said something!

One of the gracious works of the Holy Spirit is that He lovingly reveals what we cannot—or do not want to—see. Like a mirror, He exposes the sin in our lives and shows us where change is needed.

In John 16, Jesus tells His disciples that the Holy Spirit will convict the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment. The Greek word translated convict, elenchō, carries the idea of exposing, convincing, or bringing something to light. No one recognizes the seriousness of sin and their need for Jesus apart from the Spirit’s work. The Holy Spirit exposes the stain of sin and points us to the only One who can wash it away. Through Jesus, our sins can be made white as snow (Isaiah 1:18, 1 John 1:9).

For those who believe, the Spirit continues working within us, bringing our sin to light and transforming us from the inside out. Paul writes, “For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh” (Galatians 5:17). The Holy Spirit has holy desires. When our attitudes, actions, or ambitions do not align with His desires, He faithfully lets us know.

Jesus dealt with our condemnation once and for all on the cross (John 3:17-18). Therefore, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Condemnation drives us away from God in shame; conviction draws us toward God in repentance. Because He loves us, the Holy Spirit exposes what is harming us so He can change us and make us more like Jesus.

Today, embrace the Spirit’s conviction, respond to His prompting, and trust that His ways are always better than yours.
