Let the Lord Guide You

DAY 9: LET THE LORD GUIDE YOU

by Pastor Heiden Ratner
Sep. 9th, 2025

“The former governors who were before me laid heavy burdens on the people and took from them for their daily ration forty shekels of silver. Even their servants lorded it over the people. But I did not do so, because of the fear of God.” – Nehemiah 5:15

DEVOTION

GPS maps, compasses, street signs, coaches, advisers, pastors, and mentors all share one thing in common: they guide. They help us navigate the twists and turns of life, offering direction when we face big decisions or even small everyday choices. Sometimes decisions must be made in the moment, other times they are carefully calculated—but either way, we’re always being guided by someone or something. That was true for the Old Testament leader Nehemiah.

In the 5th century B.C., Nehemiah faced a major decision. He could sit back and watch his people suffer as Israel crumbled, or he could step forward in faith. Because he feared the Lord and loved his people, Nehemiah chose to act. He courageously asked King Artaxerxes to support his mission to rebuild Jerusalem’s wall. The king granted his request, and Nehemiah left the comfort of his position to take on something risky and unpopular.

God honored his obedience. Not only was the wall rebuilt, but Nehemiah was later chosen as governor. From that place of leadership, he made bold, God-honoring decisions—calling the people back to prayer, fasting, and repentance, and modeling what it meant to live in the fear of the Lord. In Nehemiah 5, he pointed out how the people had been mistreated under previous leaders, but under his watch, that would no longer be the case. Why? “Because of the fear of God” (Nehemiah 5:15). His choices weren’t shaped by power, popularity, or profit—they were guided by God Himself.

So, let me ask you: Who’s guiding you? Is it fear of failure, fear of people’s opinions, or fear of man? If Nehemiah had been driven by those fears, he would have never taken the first step. Instead, he feared God and led with wisdom. As you walk with Jesus today, let His Spirit guide you (Galatians 5:16). When you follow Him, you’ll not only make better decisions—you’ll also discover the joy that comes from walking in His ways.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” – Proverbs 3:5–6

PRAYER

Lord, I ask You today to guide me. Help me make the right decisions in the right ways. Where I lack wisdom, speak clearly. Where I feel confused, give me clarity. And where I feel afraid, give me courage. May the fear of the Lord be ever before me, and may I follow Your leading and guidance in my life today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

CHALLENGE

Before you make your next decision today—big or small—pause and pray Proverbs 3:5–6 out loud. Then ask yourself: Am I being guided by fear, or by faith in God? Write your answer in a journal or notes app, and invite the Lord to redirect you if needed.
